Storm and hail damage roof repair in Fort Wayne

Storm and hail roof repairs run $2,632 to $22,127 nationally, and when a covered storm caused the damage, homeowners insurance often pays most of it. After a Fort Wayne hail or windstorm, we inspect your roof, photograph every hit and write an estimate you and your adjuster can work from.

Right after the storm

  1. Look from the ground. Shingle pieces in the yard, dents in gutters, downspouts and the air conditioner's fins, or a dinged car all point to a roof that took hits too.
  2. Take dated photos of anything damaged, inside and out, before it gets cleaned up.
  3. If water is coming in, call us at (260) 254-7714 for a tarp. Covering an opening is part of protecting your home, and policies expect you to do it.
  4. Do not go up on the roof. Hail damage is hard to see from a ladder anyway.
  5. Call us for an inspection, then decide whether to file. Be careful with crews that knock on doors after a storm. In Indiana, no roofer may offer to pay or rebate your deductible, or handle your claim for you.

What hail and wind do to shingles

A hail hit on an asphalt shingle leaves a dark spot where the granules were knocked off, and it often feels soft, like a bruise on an apple. Some hits crack the shingle's mat. Either way, the shingle no longer sheds sun and water the way it should, even if it looks fine from the street.

Wind works from the edges. It lifts shingle tabs and breaks the sealant strip that holds each row down, which leaves a crease across the shingle. A creased shingle can stay on the roof for months and then leak or blow off in the next storm.

On a metal roof, hail leaves dents. Most are only cosmetic, but deep ones can split a seam or loosen screws.

Storms that hit Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne gets a damaging storm most summers. A few from the National Weather Service's records:

  • June 29, 2012: a derecho brought a 91 mph gust to Fort Wayne International Airport.
  • June 1, 2019: hail 2 inches across fell 3 miles north-northeast of Fort Wayne, with smaller hail all over the city.
  • June 13, 2022: another derecho set the airport's record gust at 98 mph and blew a roof off north of New Haven.
  • June 25, 2023: hail up to 1.75 inches near Leo-Cedarville, inch-wide hail on the northeast side, and shingles blown off in New Haven.

How the insurance claim works

The claim is yours: you file it and you deal with your insurer. Indiana law keeps roofers out of the middle, so a roofer can't start or pursue a claim for you. Here's how it usually goes with us:

  1. We inspect and photograph the damage, so you know whether filing makes sense.
  2. You report the claim, and your insurer sends an adjuster.
  3. We give the adjuster our photos and written estimate, and we can be on the roof when they inspect.
  4. Your insurer sends its decision in writing. If you signed with us before that, Indiana gives you three business days after the decision to cancel.
  5. We do the work. On many policies the insurer pays in two parts: a first check up front, and the held-back depreciation once the work is done.

What storm damage repair costs

Storm, wind and hail roof repairs cost $2,632 to $22,127, about $12,300 on average nationally. Hail repairs alone average about $8,046, usually between $5,408 and $11,211. Where the damage falls in that range depends on how much of the roof took hits and whether the insurer approves a repair or a full new roof.

JobTypical cost
Storm, wind or hail roof repair$2,632 to $22,127
Hail roof repair$5,408 to $11,211
Full shingle roof after a storm$8,000 to $16,000, like any new roof

With a covered claim, what you pay out of pocket is usually your deductible, plus anything you add that the storm didn't damage.

Storm damage questions

How do I know if hail damaged my roof?

You usually can't tell from the ground. Dents in gutters, downspouts and vents are the best clue, and shingle grit washing out of the downspouts after the storm is another. An inspection on the roof finds the dark, soft spots that mark each hit.

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?

Either is fine, but an inspection first tells you whether there's enough damage to file. Some insurers keep a record of a reported claim even when they pay nothing, so it helps to know before you call.

How long do I have to file a claim?

Check your policy for its deadline. Waiting also makes it harder to tie the damage to one storm, so get the roof looked at within days.

Do you work with my insurance company?

Yes, whichever company you have. The claim stays between you and your insurer, and we give their adjuster our photos and written estimate and show them the damage on the roof.

What about my deductible?

It's yours to pay. Indiana law bars any roofer from offering to pay or rebate a deductible, including through a discount, a gift or money for a yard sign.
