DeKalb County's roof numbers

Auburn's own building-code summary lists the numbers a roof here is built to:

Design valueAuburn and DeKalb County
Wind speed115 mph, set site by site
Ground snow load30 pounds per square foot (Allen County is 20)
WeatheringSevere
Ice shield underlaymentRequired

The same summary says roof truss members may not be cut, notched or altered. It's important for a new skylight or a big vent: on a truss roof, the opening has to fit between the trusses or be engineered.

The June 2023 windstorm

On June 25, 2023, straight-line winds damaged siding and roofs on Auburn homes, the National Weather Service reported. Four years earlier, on June 1, 2019, hail 1.75 inches across fell in Butler, on the east side of DeKalb County. Wind damage that only cost a few shingles can still leave others creased, so a roof that came through 2023 with a quick patch deserves a full look.

Older Auburn

About half of Auburn's homes were built before 1980, and almost a quarter before 1940. The Downtown Auburn Historic District is on the National Register, and we found no local review board for houses here.
